28. Embedded in this anecdote is a moral. In addition to the normal ways that knowledge is sought—Contemplation is considered in chapter 5, we can also experience intuitions and insights, which usually increase our understanding of something specific. It may well be that intuitions arise from the operation of senses far finer than the physical sense, while insight is described in terms of light, sight, and vision, and all can act as stimuli for further exploration. It can be argued that such experiences are ‘given’—almost as an act of grace, and that being so such aid comes from a divine realm rather than a human one. Acts of grace must be acknowledged, because they cannot be provided, as it were, on request, nor can they be worked for to gain as a reward, and the simplest way of acknowledging is to follow what has been given, which is exactly what Socrates does.
